Lilburn was one of Gwinnett County’s first cities to grow quickly as metro Atlanta expanded. Residents are reminded of the city’s railroad history as the train passes every hour through Lilburn’s Old Town. The city continues to grow and evolve. A new City Hall was built in the Old Town area in 1976. The Calvin Fitchett Municipal Complex was added in the early Nineties. As the local government grows to serve the local population, another City Hall and library will be built soon, as well as a redeveloped Main Street.
Lilburn is only 20 miles from downtown Atlanta. As home to the largest Hindu temple in North America, Lilburn is a worldly community with a small-town America feel. Main Street features tree-lined sidewalks, vintage-style lamp posts, and traditional brick architecture. Enjoy a concert in Lilburn City Park, go for a bike ride on Camp Creek Greenway, or experience the BAPS Shri Swaminarayn Mandir Hindu temple via a free tour.
Lilburn City Park is a ten-acre downtown green space featuring a walking/jogging path, a playground for kids, tennis courts, a rental pavilion, and an old-fashioned bandstand. This park is also the trailhead for the Camp Creek Greenway Trail. Residents also enjoy Mountain Park Park, which includes a skate complex, seven baseball or softball fields, a football field overlay, six lighted tennis courts, playgrounds, a pavilion, a soft surface trail, and a one-mile paved trail. Bryson Park also provides recreational opportunities, with a multi-purpose sports field, a lighted track, two youth soccer fields, a sand volleyball court, outdoor basketball courts, a playground, a pavilion, and a half-mile multi-purpose paved trail.
A distinctive destination in Lilburn is the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, the largest Hindu Mandir (temple) in the United States. Open to all visitors, the Mandir was opened in August, 2007. It was built from Turkish limestone, Italian marble, and Indian pink sandstone, much of which was carved by hand in India. Intricate carvings depict tales of inspiration, devotion, and history.
